Hypnotherapy is not like the movies. So What Is It Like?

You are not zapped, or unconscious, you don’t lose control, actually during the entire hypnosis session  you can hear exactly what I am saying. You can hear my voice, the sounds around you, if you want to move around, itch your nose you can, and at the end of the session you will remember about as much as you would a normal conversation.

To be honest with you it is not as flamboyant as a hypnotist show but it is still a whole lot more interesting than counselling  With counselling you need to talk with a person for hours, about your thoughts, your life, and what you should now do. Often you go 6-12 times,  and talk about things your life circumstances over and over again. Does it help? For someone people…for you maybe you want something else.

Luckily there is an alternative with hypnotherapy, its interesting because it is about

Putting An End To Emotional Eating With Hypnotherapy

You find yourself eating because you feel down, bored, lonely,  hurt or stressed and keep using food as a  pick me up in the moment. While the sweet lover is moving towards food because they just love the taste, the pick me up is about eating food to move away  from feeling bad.

It is similar to the panadol a person uses to relieve a headache, or the times when you watch T.V even though the program is boring or on  repeat.  Food offers a distraction  from the moment, or gives some form of stimulation from the mundane.

Stopping Binge Eating With Hypnotherapy

You know you are suppose to eat the apple, but feel yourself  being sucked in the opposite direction. The need to binge eat becomes overwhelming, and you give in to it and binge eat until you feel stuffed and bloated. On the inside you feel disgusted and then the guilt sets in, and you find yourself thinking why did I do that for. The guilt builds and perhaps you purge the food, or restrict your diet or perform lots of exercise.

I Don’t Want Therapy. I Just Want To Lose Weight.

With most clients I use hypnosis and get all your positive thoughts and feelings, make them stronger and stronger so you burst out of your old habits of eating and into something new and better

However there are also many clients that have a therapeutic part to their session.  it is why it is called Hypnotherapy. It means we talk about feelings, and emotions, and sometimes a client just needs to have a little cry about something to.

This is all very normal, because with hypnosis we are dealing with the subconscious  which is responsible for emotions and feelings, and tears, and so  are expressed more easily during hypnosis,  and this is is why I can make a difference when nothing else seems to work.

“Which one will I be?” You maybe asking.  Therapy or non Therapy. And it is easy you will already know. If having read this you feel a little lump in your throat, I sudden bit of anxiety know about using hypnotherapy, then likely there will be some emotion during the session which is good, as it will then create a rapid change in your behaviour.

If however you just read through this, and it all seems straight forward, then it is likely there will be little therapy during your sessions and instead change will occur primarily through increasing motivation, self confidence and instilling new habits.

Hint: The more anxious or worried you feel about doing something, the closer you are to the actual problem area, and by going into that problem area, it is how you will achieve the most dramatic results.

Anxiety and strong emotion is like a little flag saying the problem is right over here.

Weight Loss with Hypnotherapy. How comfort eating adds on the pounds?

Put your hand near a hot stove element and what do you do? Move away from it.  Have a headache, you reach for the panadol. It is easy to identify how we react to physical pain, more difficult to notice how react to emotional discomfort and stress.

We enjoy feeling happy, relaxed and at peace of mind, but when we feel stress, anxiety,  anger, or sadness, and boredem it is uncomfortable and so  we want to move away from the discomfort.

Food is one means people  use to distract.  Termed as an emotional crutch by some, it is  an easy way of distracting from what is happening. Let’s remember not every one who is overweight does this, but many people do without realizing  it.

Weight Loss by Hypnotherapy and removing an emotional crutch.

Lets look at some examples of common problems we look to resolve using weight loss by hypnotherapy to overcome emotional.

  • Being around  particular people that annoy or  frustrate us ( usually Family,  Boy/Girl friends, ex partners)
  • In particular places that stress them. Work or Home.
  • Stressed/Anxious.  Worries, bout money  work, family or the future.
  • Boredom. Not enough challenges ion ones life.
  • Loneliness. Lack close trusting relationships with other people
  • Sadness. Messing something in your life, a person or an experience.
  • Guilt of what a person has done in the past. Regrets on how life has been lived.
  • Helplessness A person who feels trapped in the situation they find themselves.

Dramatic Results with Weight Loss By Hypnotherapy

With hypnosis we break this cycle of distraction, and take the energy out of the emotion so you no longer feel compelled to move away from it. The results are often very dramatic with a reduction of food intake in as little as 2-3 sessions.

Weight Loss, A Failure Of Thinking

If you have ever read a book called The Secret, there is an idea presentated that what you believe in will tend to come true, and while this may or may not be true, negative ideas about yourself often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

Motivating beliefs learned from childhood can continue to influence peoples eating habits as adults. Eating out of politeness for parents, family or friends. Believing because you or your family have always been overweight, that you can’t lose weight. Thinking food as a reward. When using hypnotherapy for weight loss, hypnosis is applied so limiting beliefs can go, and you are back in control. These limiting thoughts are common to weight loss and below are a few common ones clients bring into my office with them.

I Ate A Biscuit. That is it my Diet Is Over!

Personality traits or self criticism or perfectionism tend to create a lot of guilt and anxiety which in turn fuels emotional eating or hopelessness. It is often referred to as an all or nothing attitude, ‘because I had that one biscuit my diet is over’. ‘Because I didn’t exercise today I will give up’. ‘I’m not good enough because I can’t keep to this eating plan’. Hypnotherapy for weight loss is about creating a balanced lifestyle and this also includes a balance way of thinking  about food and dieting and the mistakes along the way.

I am stressed! Where is that food.

There is only one feeling associated with food and that is a rumbling feeling in your stomach. If you are eating at other times it is about something else.  We need to break down these associations, so food becomes just food rather than a coping strategy.

My Stomach is Fat, my Legs are Thick like Tree trunks, and I can only See a Double Chin.

Self appreciation translates directly into motivation. When you feel down about yourself your motivation to look after your self is also down. We use hypnotherapy sessions to get you to feel good now despite the weight this increase in confidence  will motivate you to take action.

I want to be Slim now

To create a new lifestyle of healthy habits takes time. This requires I mind frame of ongoing persistence. Taking satisfaction in small changes each week rather than from the scales . Hypnosis can help make this an enjoyable experience rather than one where it feels like you are missing out.

The Science Behind Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss

The Studies

Hypnosis Subjects Lost More Weight Than 90% of Others and Kept it Off

Seventeen to sixty-seven year olds took part in a treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. In total 107 people participated. Following the end of the nine week study, both groups achieved significant weight reduction. However, at the eight month and two year follow up, only  the hypnosis group showed significant additional weight loss.

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Volume: 54 489-492

Investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment….hypnosis was more effective than a control group (17 vs. .5 pounds on follow-up).

Cochrane, Gordon; Friesen, J. (1986). Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment.Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 54, 489-492.

A study of 60 women separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds, while the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only .5 pounds

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996

A meta-analysis, compared the results of  hypnosis weight loss treatments across a number of studies and showed that with the addition of  hypnosis weight loss increased by an average of 97% during treatment, and even more importantly increased the effectiveness after treatment by 146%.
